Five Fun Pot Facts

1. Hemp, hemp hooray. Artists and marijuana have more in common than you think. The word “canvas” is derived from the word “cannabis,” because historically, painters’ canvases were made of hemp.

2. Just legalize it already. Paraguay is purportedly the biggest producer of pot in the entire world, and runs a close race with Mexico. Possession is decriminalized, though the country is still the main source of illegal cannabis for Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile, producing almost 6,000 tons of smokeable cannabis every year due to the area’s rich and fertile red soil.

3. There’s no such thing as being too high. To lethally overdose on pot, a human being would have to smoke more than 1,500 pounds of pot in 15 minutes, making lethal overdoses by smoking literally impossible.

4. Pot is just as American as apple pie. The first two drafts of the Declaration of Independence were written on paper made out of hemp.

5. It’s always 4:20 somewhere. While it is almost impossible to find a stoner who doesn’t consider 4-20 a sacred date, time, or number, it is equally difficult to know for sure where the term originated. Top hits on Google report it as originating from police code, Jerry Garcia’s lucky hotel room number, and a common theme in songs by the band Phish.
